Compare not getting an offensive rebound to getting it. The difference is another chance to score. Excluding end of quarter situations, the other team will eventually get the ball so them scoring is not relevant. Just look at how many average points are obtained after the rebound. It is definitely less than 2.

If seems like you are unreasonably assuming that absent the assist that the possession would have been worth 0 points. Also, shouldn't some of the credit go to the player who actually makes the shot?
