Agree on the false start. Their rule is stupid for the reasons you state. If you're a good starter you should jump, putting pressure on the opp's to stay in the blocks a bit longer.
Did you see the woman jump in the 100 m dash finals yesterday and the starter NOT call it??
You (but maybe not everyone) knows that a player may run past first base without being vulnerable to being tagged (unless he subsequently makes a move to run to second base before returning to first base). If a runner slides he forfeits this opportunity and thus may be tagged out if he leaves the base (e.g. carried by his momentum).
OTOH, I can imagine that with practice a player can potentially reach first base faster by sliding AND STILL be able to consistently stop still touching the base. The latter sounds like the hard part. BTW, even closed minded baseball people recommend sliding to avoid a tag (when the defense is so out-of-position that they can't apply a force out on first base).
From simple physics, running through the base (not sliding) requires one's center of mass to get closer to the base before touching than sliding does which I'm sure is why you brought this up in the first place.
BTW, while we're talking Olympic events, there are many subtleties in the center-of-mass situation in certain field events, particularly high jump and pole vault.
