I think clocks on all open matches is a very good idea, but it's a little intimidating, even to a guy like me who is all for clocking everything. I played Tim in a one-pointer for a right to a bye, which was the first time I had used a clock, and it seemed that I had to go very fast compared to my usual pace. That might be because it was only a one-pointer, and it might be because I play slowly, but I don't think that the point of clocks in tournaments is to force people to play blitz backgammon and rush to pick up cocked dice.
The big problem is with a 9 point match that takes 4 hours to play. Even very slow time controls will prevent those. In chess, TCs are usually around 2.5-3 hours per person, but it's rare to have a game that actually lasts 6 hours, since most people don't use all of their time. Of course there ARE games that last 6 hours, but they're relatively uncommon. I don't think TCs should be 3 hours, but they should at least give people leeway for thinking time and for cocked dice.
