I think we need to make a couple concessions:

1) clocks may be desired by many of us, but we aren't the run-of-the-mill tournament BG players.

2) settings which are acceptable to me or to us may not (and probably aren't) accepttable to the majority -- most of whom have never once used clocks.

3) we aren't going to be happy if the only people who show up to tournaments are the few of us who are adamant about clock usage.

My conclusion from these is that we need to make the settings as non-threatening as possible to the majority of tournament players. The purpose is to speed up the few who take way too long, and those are not the typical tournament players. But the impact is going to be felt by all.

And one more peripheral observation:

Players who prefer NOT to play with clocks often prefer to see (specific) other people play with clocks.
