Almost all events are already single elimination with progressive consolation. The modified Swiss system is a once-annual variant popular with a number of players. It offers the possibility of more play for the average player and more chances for the better players. I'm pretty sure that players like Neil, Richard, and Steve did not feel their chances were infinitesimal when they were at 5-2 going into the eighth round. I think Ray may have been at 5-2 as well, and if so, I'm confident that he didn't believe his chances were infinitesimal either. I, for one, thought it was exciting to have so many WC players with chances to win late in the event.

I agree that Dan need not explore alternative tournament structures for his potential new event. Single elimination is the only format that works well for a two-day weekend event and is easier for the first-time director to run than are other formats. I also agree that computer draws should be the order of the day.
