Some thoughts after seeing a few replies

Isn't it likely that counting is easier for some than others? For example, let's say at the next TY where all below are present, I set up a series of positions and have Neil, Stick, UBK, Bill, and a handful of others (M C-G probably won't be there :) count the positions as fast as possible with some scoring system based upon time plus penalty time for size of errors. I don't think it's simply a matter of method or amount of time spent practicing.

Keeping a running count in a non-race would throw my concentration away from (likely) more important things.

Kit says he can get an estimate of pipcount difference, accurate to a couple pips, within a very short time (a few seconds). This would be a very good skill to have, especially because pipcount difference can be a significant factor in play decisions.

Some have mentioned (here and before) that counting when opp's clock is running saves time. As far as "opp is moving his checkers around", you can at least do the count of your own checkers. Then a difference count (even on your own clock) will give you the entire absolute pipcount.

I'm pretty sure few anywhere do OtB match equity calculations. Those are mostly going out-the-window, too, for all but the savants. So other techniques (probably already in use by some players even in non-clocked matches) are going to be needed.

Oh, and for boastful Stick, if Jack Kissane hasn't lost his touch (I haven't seen him at TY's in the last 2 or 3 years), YOU're no better than third fastest.
