ASL

However, I have a serious problem. I have a terrible time remembering the first count after doing the second count.
This isn't new (e.g. it's in Art Benjamin's MATEHMAGICS book, for example): American Sign Language uses a single hand for a decimal digit. (Most people it takes both hands!) You only need two digits -- i.e. you know if the pipcount is 143 or 43 when your hands show '43'.
There are probably a dozen (maybe dozen thousand :) websites that illustrate the ASL hand positions for digits 0-9. Or I can show you next month in Peoria. It takes some practice (like anything) because there are some symmetries (six vs. nine, seven vs. eight) which can be confusing at first. But it's like riding a bicycle -- once you learn it you will never forget it.
