Better than 8,9,12 (%) is 10% +-2 pips. (10% lead; subtract 2 to find initial double point; subtract 1 to find redouble point; add 2 to find take/pass point.)
But this only works for pre-bearoff races with little or no wastage.
AND when you are talking non-$-like matchscores, something else is usually needed.
Ignoring clock issues, I use straight Kleinman for pre-bearoff races and Ward+Kleinman for bearoff races with lots of checkers remaining. ('Lots' is something like six or more for each player.)
In general, pre-bearoff races are much easier to figure than late bearoff races, where memory is probably a much more reliable tool than calculation.
