I agree candor may cause problems, particularly in a cross-cultural environment and/or between those with different native languages -- inference, implication, and differences of interpretation are only amplified.

However, between two people from the same country and with the same native language (as I assume was the case -- as surprising at that is to me), the lack of candor is quite annoying and, oftentimes, quite telling.
