Similar goals as above.
HP d5000t (Home and Home Office) system, customized:
Vista Ultimate 64-bit OS.
Intel Q9550 (2.83 GHz so 12% faster than Q9300 and 9% slower than Q9650).
6GB of 800 MHz ram.
NVIDEA GeForce 9500GS graphics card w/512 MB onboard memory.
500 GB SATA 3Gb/s harddrive.
Onboard wired ethernet (didn't look up speed specs).
16X DVD+/-RW w/lightscribe optical drive.
Wired keyboard and optical mouse.
HP w1907 19 inch digital monitor.
Extended warranty for 2nd and 3rd years.
Total price is $1810 before shipping. (Extended warranty was $130. OS was an extra $160 compared to VISTA Home premium. Processor was an extra $350 compared to the Q9300. $100 was for extra 3 GB memory. $50 for a nicer graphics card. So you can water this system down and save some $.)
Compared to system #1, besides the slower processor (already detailed), this monitor is about $80-90 lower in cost (don't know how much loss of performance, probably irrelevant for most). It has twice as much memory and twice as big of a harddrive. I believe the graphics card in the earlier system is more powerful (and more expensive) but it's a business (e.g. CAD) card while the one on this system is more gamer oriented.
A potentially BIG difference is that you get both XP and Vista with the earlier system. As many probably know, Microsoft is pushing hard for Vista and are discontinuing selling XP, but many powerful vendors (like HP and Dell) have pressured them into making XP available for business systems only.
Now I'll see what Gateway has to offer. Stay tuned for system #3.
