In Response To: Why Are TD's So Resistant? (Jason Lee)

Good question, Jason. I don't know the answer but I suspect I know as much or more than many voicing their opinions here (on clocks in general; I don't mean this specific subthread).

It is my (unscientific) observation that most players who take extra time tend to do so on a more/less regular basis rather than play moderately quickly most of the time and then 'tank' for five minutes on one move. Thus for the general player I think it helps to lengthen the free time per move (12-->15 or even -->18). 3 minutes bonus per matchpoint would likely be less stressful as well. I don't know that 4 minutes per matchpoint is necessary or would even help much.

My direct experience at Ty's where clocks have been installed by the director on my own matches have led to the following observation: players who are not accustomed to clocks play EXTREMELY quickly when a clock is instituted, not only not using their bonus time but not even getting close to the free time per move limit most of the time! (As always I realize there are exceptions.) Some of these have been innately fast players, but not all of them. As a result, when the match ends they've used hardly any of their bonus time. In effect, most of the time the amount of bonus time is irrelevant, in my limited observation, for players new to clocks.

For ABT Ty's, I think 15-3 would do the trick at the 99% level and not intimidate most players. (The ones who would have trouble are likely to be some of the ones who are slowing things down now.) If resistance is there (and I think it is), we should break the ice by getting people into the flow without too many forfeits. As time goes by and people get used to the clocks, AND if it appears that even with the clocks (at those settings) the Ty advancement is getting hindered, the settings can be re-evaluated and tightened (or even looseened)!
