You're not getting much support so far. This type of event might have its place. Back in the 70's I remember a couple similar events which were held in Indianapolis at shopping centers. Those were round-robins (which have some similarities to your VP structure). They were wide open events (from beginner to Open level players) and were as much (or more) for getting people interested in tournament backgammon as they were for finding a true best player. (Butch Meese won one of these, I found out many years later. I played in one or two of them myself.)
New ideas are good. I recall a quote from the (controversial) Nobel Laureate Linus Pauling when asked "why is it that you have so many good ideas?" His reply: "...because I have so many ideas."
