I could run that one but lunchtime is over so it will have to wait.

Ironically this position on the field (50 -- > opp's ~35) is where a lot of NFL coaches actually do go for 1st down. Too far for a (high percentage, anyway) FG, particularly because if you miss the opposing team gets the ball not from the line-of-scrimmage but from the place the ball was actually placed for the kick (8 yards further back from the LoS). Too close to the goalline for a good punt. (I haven't looked lately but when I last did look, the NFL is not nearly as good at killing the ball inside the 20 as many would like you to believe. The ball just goes into the endzone too often, giving the opp the ball on the 20, so a net gain on the play of ~20 yards.)

It's quite often right to go for a first down even needing in the neighborhood of 10 yards when at this location on the field. For Chicago to wimp out so badly needing a yard -- that's pitiful.
