OT: Laptop Suggestions

A couple things you didn't mention:
1) Battery life. If you travel by air you (should) care about this.
2) Weight. For the same reasons as #1.
Laptops come in three main categories appealing to three different sets of requirements: A) desktop replacement -- meaning you basically want all the features of a desktop computer but something that you can occasionally take with you (e.g. by car). B) lightweight -- to be used often for travel -- see my 1 and 2 above for example. C) general purpose -- these are tweeners, i.e. smaller and lighter than the desktop replacements but larger screens and more peripherals than the lightweights.
Pricewise, generalizations don't cover all situations but in general the lightweights are the most expensive, followed by the desktop replacements. But of course you can configure any from each category to be so loaded with state-of-the-art features to find exceptions.
As far as brand name, there is no good answer as far as I'm concerned. Just laptops, I have two Dells (both bought through my work -- Dell loves to get their hooks into universities), an IBM (hand-me-down at work) and a Compaq -- the only one I paid for with my own money. Only the newest one (Dell purchased this summer) hasn't had the HD replaced. Both the first Dell and the IBM have required fan replacement (probably because of heavy use for rollouts -- seriously). Bottom line is I like all four of them.
Asking for an opinion about laptop brands is similar to asking about car brands -- you'll likely get strong opinions but as to how much import you should give to them....
Probably didn't answer your question but if you can be more specific about your requirements and constraints, the easier it will be to advise.
