I definitely like you mix of different aspects (history, social, etc). That's an appealing approach, IMO.
I taught some shortcourses this summer on beginning an intermediate level BG. One thing I tried (and seemed to work well) in the beginner class is to teach them how to play/move in three stages:
1) bearoff only;
2) bearin with slight contact (one player owns midpoint, player on roll has single checker on 14-point);
3) opening setup.
There are a couple advantages to this sequence:
A) learn that to win your goal is to be the first to bear off all 15 checkers.
B) learn hitting a blocking in one simple situation/setup.
C) only see the opening setup and all its complications after you learn how to win and learn what it means to get hit and avoid getting hit.
D) the bearoff is non-intimidating. Players become comfortable with the game from the get-go.
