Do Tournament Directors make too much money?

I am not aware of any tournament directors who run tournaments so that they can reap great profits. Most tournament directors are happy to break even with a little profit to be able to share with their staff. As far as the calcutta rake, most tournaments that I have seen donate the calcutta rake to a charity. I do think there is great risk for a TD, especially one starting a new tournament. The best way to make players familiar with your own upcoming tournament is to attend as many other tournaments that you can, which while not directly a charge, is still money that the tournamnet director spends, although they get the benefit of being able to play in the tournament. TDs also can have expenses of providing transportation and lodging for their staff, as well as any compnsation. A great deal of the tournament expenses are also up front, and since many fees and rakes from side events are not collected until the days of the tournament, a TD may not know until close to the conclusion of a tournament whether they finish "in the black."
