Why do like records play like records?

For a traditional Swiss (in bridge, anyway) you play an opp with an equal record (or 1 win different if former isn't possible). Of course the idea there is that better players win and worse players lose, so you're matched against someone of similar skill level.

The correlation between winning and skill level is much weaker in BG, as we all know. So the traditional argument loses a lot of it's teeth.

HOWEVER, I can guarantee that if a tournament were drawn as you recommend there would be a lot of whining (make that 'belly-aching') going on before rounds 3 and 4.
