Round Robins aren't so bad if they are based upon simply W-L records rather than total points scored (very bad idea because of moon shooting and/or angling, etc.). They are sometimes used for small novice fields where the experience of playing a lot of matches (win or lose) is a key goal of the tournament organizers.
One feature of the Midwest Champs is that the Open field is limited to 64 and it always fills. Thus there are no byes to add to the inherent randomness. Since this Ty's main event covers only a 2-day weekend, limiting the field has the advantage of moving things along in a timely manner. The Ty's which cover 3-days (or more), like Michigan and LV, don't need to be as concerned with time issues so an unlimited field size makes sense. And I'm certainly not being negative about Pitt (for example) where >64 has happened in the past. More entrants means more prize $. It's a judgment call. Different tokes for different folks.
