I recall a Jake Jacobs article (in Flint Area Backgammon News, I think) where he made the statement (paraphrased) that most of the errors he sees when watching tournament play are due to lack of courage. I.e. when faced with a tough decision, the conservative path is chosen. I suspect Jake is mostly talking about top players (covering a match between the 48th and 61st best players in the Open field doesn't sell newsletters :). However, that might not matter.
