In Response To: Theft at Recent ABT Events (David Rockwell)

With respect to David, I don't like this idea.

What would you do with the coincidence list, make it public? Or would the directors be responsible for keeping a watch over the players on the list?

In theory a good idea; in practice a bad one, IMO.

Theft at BG tournaments is not new, even petty thefts. I lost a doubling cube once. (So did Ray, and his was inscribed with his nick.) Last year someone took the microphone at an ABT event and said something like "I hope the person who took my dicecups can really use them without his conscious haunting him." I heard so many stories over the years of dice being snatched that whenever I leave my board open (e.g. for a break) I put the dice in my pocket.

The worst story I ever heard was at the Chicago Open about 10 years ago when the staff person watching the cashbox was distracted and the entire cache of entry fees disappeared. (And director Joanne Feinstein replaced them out of her pocket -- now that is class.)

These recent events are a reminder to be vigilant. We'd like to think that the BG community is trustworthy, and most are, just not 100%. We live in a real world whether we're playing backgammon or parking on the street.
