I think there's a relevant point to this thread. A lot of players including myself wonder, "what will it take to succeed?"

It's not the question I have trouble with; it's the answer. Until someone does a systematic analysis and reports it the best evidence we have is anecdotal. As you mentioned there is a bias in including bad ER matches in one's (own) overall average ER, there is also a bias in even hearing about those matches.

That's not an attempt to counter your contention that consistency is valuable -- I wholeheartedly agree. I just wonder if the top players are as consistent as they are being advertised.
