Bad Behavior in Michigan

In Response To: Bad Behavior in Michigan (Jason Lee)

(Although Jason and I discussed this a bit in Novi, I think some things I said are worth repeating here for all.)

I learned BG in 1975, played quite a bit from then until 1982, then took time off to go back to school and admitted that game-playing would be a huge mistake until I finished my degree. Even though the latter occurred in 1988 I still didn't get back to the Ty scene until 1992.

When I returned, the most surprising thing to me was how nice most (99%) of the players were. That was not the case in the late 70's. I was extremely pleased at this change. (I have my theories, but this post is getting too long already.) This situation has remained for the past 17 years. Only once in the last 10+ years do I remember anyone being a jerk OtB. (Before, that, well, I can't remember back that far. :)

As was the case when Achim Muller was bullied in the semifinals in MC a couple years ago, you were taken off guard because you were not accustomed to such rude activity by your opp. It's easy for you now (or even Ray in response to Achim) to determine after the fact that you erred in not confronting your opp earlier. But when it's totally unexpected because you've never faced it before, it's definitely not an easy decision by many players, and I include myself in that group.

It's unfortunate that this occurred, and it's unfortunate that a local (Michigan) player soiled the reputation of his own region's tournament. I must stress to all reading this that this is a rare (in my experience) occurrence, but I'm glad you pointed it out to us as this CAN happen and we all need to know how to deal with it.

BTW, did Greg ever apologize directly to you or just to the staff?
