In Response To: Cube error rates (Marty Storer)

Marty: I guess so. But then conservative doublers would have more incentive to correct their mistakes.

No they would NOT. It is a much bigger mistake, which compounds itself often, to double EARLY. Late doublers tend to make smaller mistakes, which can add up if there are a string of them, but... They NORMALLY can correct the situation at their next turn, because they still retain ACCESS to the cube.

If at this time they no longer feel any compunction to double, (like if they felt they were close last turn but decided to wait), then they have probably gained by not having doubled in the GAME/match, even though the bot will ding them for a smallish error.

If you are making big errors not doubling positions that are doubles, you need some more practice with the bots to LEARN the difference.

When in doubt wait is the most useful approach to avoid the biggest error humanly possible, doubling before it is a double.

There is only one exception and that is that you should double early if there is a reasonable chance your opponent is going to PASS that double even more incorrectly than your bad double was in the first place.

These matters are rather delicate, however, and require acute judgement and experience.
