Uh, yes. (Or at least, uh, maybe.)
The best strategy when playing a negative EV game (besides not playing at all) is to minimize the number of trials. Consider roulette: assuming you have $100 and your goal is to maximize your chances of doubling it. Would you: a) bet $1 every time; b) bet $100 the very first time? (And if your goal were to make $3500, better bet the $100 straight up on a number, sunshine!)
In my book I described a Fish Coup; an extremely weak player's best strategy for winning a match against an extremely strong player might be to double as an underdog, take the redouble, and reship.
The principle is the same even when the mismatch is small, it's the extent to which it should be applied that differs.
