What is the purpose of EMG? Of Snowie error rate? [longish]

Moral: Don't expect too much of the Snowie error rate, particular for a single match.
I've been saying this for a long time in rebuttal to those who say that Snowie-style ER are better than GNU-style ER and use this argument: "Suppose you make one move, make a mistake, get blitzed, and never see the light of day. Should you be considered `Awful' for that?"
Yes, you should, but it shouldn't count much for your overall record. It's like a pitcher who throws two complete game shutouts, and in the third game, gets torched and has a line like 1/3 IP, 7 ER. So is it fair to say that his ERAs are 0, 0, and 189? Extra-terrestrial, extra-terrestrial, and Awful. Awful only over 1/3 of an inning... this guy has thrown 18 1/3 innings and allowed 7 runs for a respectable ERA of 3.44.
If you're going to track error rates, it must be in aggregate -- not an average of averages, but by summing total EMG lost and dividing by total decisions.
