Cube error rates (one correction)

Well stated stuff, Marty.
Of course it is merely my opinion that early doubling is the worst mistake one can make.
Maybe it was better to say it is the worst one that I make... but I firmly believe that missed doubles are smaller errors... Just from observation. One early double in a 7 point match yesterday earned me an "Awful!" from Gnu. Another time I missed 5 doubles and was still considered expert.
In your example against a chronically late doubler who did better when he was "steamed"... I have found, ironically, that the best way to take advantage of late doublers is to double them EARLY...
because they won't punish you will well timed redoubles, preferring to wait until the issue has been decided and then to cash.
In tournament matches:
If you don't double EARLY, there is less chance the cube is coming back at you on 4 later at a particularly uncomfortable moment. You do not provide your opponent with "easy takes". You do provide him with opportunities to "incorrectly pass", when your position improves but he still has a proper take.
You deny him the right to send over impulsive, and potentially damaging, re-whips when your early double doesn't work out so well. You will NOT have to control your emotional response to his 4 cubes as often if you do not double early. You will have an easier time making a bold checker play when the cube is still in the middle, rather than on his side.
There are a myriad of varied reasons why early doubling is the worst possible match strategy, and this is coming from someone with more match experience than most, in ADDITION to more EARLY doubles than most.
I may double early more than anyone, but normally it is when the other guy's imagination may lead him to a fearful pass.
All things considered, though, I never want to send a cube before the bot and sometimes not even at the same time as the bots!
