The doubling algorithm is more or less [..] double now or double never.

That's a critical idea. By that definition the error is a one-time hit and a series of failures to double should perhaps be re-evaluated as each decision arises (in evaluation of an ongoing game) or by taking all other cube decisions into consideration (when the game is played and the move history is known).
