I believe in this case it has nothing to do with cube decisions in the game tree. The position is not very volatile so cubes are not contained in the depth of the tree.

First a cube is not absurd. It kills the gammons and there are plenty of them. The only reason to keep the cube is when you can cube out your opponent very effective. In fact a rollout showed that the cube can be used extremely effective by red. BGB uses some heuristics to estimate the effectiveness of the cube. Here the real value is much larger than the estimated value and the ineffective cube makes this a double. If I raise the maximum effectiveness from .65 to .71 BGB keeps the cube. Analyzing this values was long on my task list....
