In Response To: After Madison, my feelings on the baffle-tube, Part 1 (Chuck Bower)

I had a discussion with Phil about these that lasted maybe 10 minutes (pretty short for two vociferous fellows as we :) and a much longer one with Perry, whose profession involves injection molding of parts for his mass manufactured home-improvement equipment.

Several things became clear:

1) There is no consensus among players that any of this is necessary.

2) There is no consensus among proponents as to whether or not these should be permanently sealed or easily opened for dice changing/inspection, etc.

3) There is obviously no current rule in the US mentioning these at all. (Baffle box usage seem to require the consent of both players AND the director.)

Perry informed me that the injection molds would not be particularly expensive to make if such a path were chosen. That's good news and bad news. It means that counterfeiting also could be accomplished (relative to high stakes money games) inexpensively.

The market for any backgammon innovation is relatively small. Given the apparent lack of interest among the masses currently and the potential for counterfeiting, I think my idea of a tamper-proof, registered, trusted injection molded tube is a non-starter. The Brazilian tubes may well be an option (including a model which can be opened) but that also will likely be greatly affected by demand -- which seems to be pretty limited right now. But this is a rather new discussion topic even on this cutting-edge site, so maybe that will change.
