$25 a point is enough money that the "friendly" argument is bogus. (Unless everyone was sufficiently wealthy that $25/point meant nothing to anyone---but then they probably wouldn't have gotten so upset.) If you allow players to bully their way emotionally into breaking the rules in their favor, then you set a dangerous precedent.
In the future you may wish to tell an anecdote like this one right at the beginning (especially if newbies are present) to drive home the point that rules will be strictly enforced.
In a tournament I would again say that you should not give your friend any slack. If you give preferential treatment to your friend then you are indirectly cheating the rest of the field.
