Controversy in the Chou

After reading every message in this thread, it is clear to me that there are two schools of thought. People like Neil and Chuck who believe it is in good sportsmanship to allow someone who makes an honest mistake to correct it, and people like Rich, MCG, and myself, who believe in following the rules completely, expecting others to do that all the time, and expecting the same from themselves.
My problem is that if you allow some friendly slack, either in money or chouette play, where do you draw the line? We always penalize for the early roll rule in our chou...every time. We also make a person take a cube once he says he takes, or give the cube once he says he cubes.
I really don't have a problem with "being a nice guy" and letting the other guy get away with an error if I am absolutely certain that he would do the same for me...but how can you be certain?
But what I have learned from this thread is that there are people who I really respect, like Neil and Chuck, who do not think the way I think about this issue. And if I were playing them and they forgot to put a checker on the bar and I wouldn't let me make it legal, they would probably think I was a jerk, because they would not be that way with me.
So by creating this gray area, we are not only blurring the rules of the game and the rules of conduct, but we are creating situations where there can be hard feelings. By all agreeing, in front, that we will live by the rules and expect both ourselves and our opponents, no matter how friendly, to live by the rules and our mistakes, we eliminate the potential for hard feelings, misunderstandings, or for one player to be taken advantage of (if he would give leniency in areas where his opponent would not).
If I am playing baseball and the umpire calls a ball, and I know it was a strike, how would my teammates and the fans react if I insisted they made it a strike? Or if I knew I was out at 3rd but the ump called me safe? Or if I knew my foot was out of bounds when I caught the ball in the end zone...what would happen if I called that on myself?
I was hoping to have a thread full of comments that agreed with this thinking so that I could copy it to those in the chou that had such strong objections to my, and MCG's feelings that the rules should be enforced properly. I am sorry this will continue to be up for debate.
By the way, if any of you play me in a tournament and I make a mistake in your favor, not only will I expect to be held accountable for it, I will refuse any offer you might make to allow me to correct it. And please don't take offense if I hold you to the same standard.
