The point is that your friend's positive score against you affects not just you, but all the other participants in the tournament. It's similar to "throwing" games to your friends to help them win the tournament.

To crystallize the point, let me pose the following hypothetical scenario. At the beginning of the tournament, I make the following public announcement. "Some of you are my friends and some of you are not. My friends are..." I then name names. "If you are my friend, then you are allowed to change your play after you hit the clock, as long as you O.K. it with me first. If you are not my friend, then you will not be granted this privilege." Surely this grants my friends an unfair advantage over my non-friends, and it is hard to imagine anyone having the guts to make such a public announcement.

Now take away the public announcement, but go ahead and act this way anyway. Eliminating the public announcement does not make the unfairness go away. In fact, I would argue that it is worse. At least, if you make the discriminatory behavior an official rule, everyone is aware of it and can opt out of the tournament if they don't like it. But if you secretly give your friends an unfair advantage, in direct violation of the rules, then you are in effect helping them cheat.
