How do people feel about sportsmanship if you know it will only be applied one way?
To me, good sportsmanship is unilateral. I abide by my principles of good sportsmanship regardless of whether it will be reciprocated.
I still think that those who are arguing for bending the rules are not giving sufficient weight to the fact that Phil had MCG as a non-consulting partner. If I were in Phil's position except that I didn't have a partner, I would most likely cut the team some slack, with a warning that I wouldn't let them get away with it again. This is because I would be the only one suffering financially from my decision. Similarly, in a head-to-head match as opposed to a Swiss or a round-robin tournament, I would be much more willing to cut my opponent some slack. But when someone else may suffer from my decision to ignore the rules, that is quite a different matter.
And since Rich Munitz independently came up with the proposal of playing the game out both ways, I don't think I'm the only one who thinks it's a feasible option. It would have been at least worth laying the option on the table (assuming Phil had thought of the possibility).
