"in a "friendly" chouette the rules should have some elasticity. I've played in a chouette for over 10 years and we play legal moves.Let's say a player, rolls a 4-4 and moves 3 of the 4's but, then lifts his dice. We'd tell that player that he has one more 4 to play. Likewise, if a player showed that he was in fact hitting a checker, but, forgot to put it on the bar, the hit would be allowed."

Seems to me that in both of those situations, the player made an illegal play and you are telling him to play legally as you are required to under your chouette rules. I fail to see how you bend the rules at all. Seems you are following them to the letter.

"For example, in a chouette played in NYC, I was told that I could Not play unless I agreed to be filmed in it for someone's grad school assignment... You never know when you'll be told that you must be filmed, forced to sign a petition, or some other infringement of your basic rights."

I am familiar with this situation, and obviously your impression of such a situation has a lot has to do with how diplomatically the message is delivered. And my understanding is that it was not delivered particularly well. And that is unfortunate because it upset you when the situation itself did not call for that.

When you enter a chouette, you agree to abide by the rules in effect at that time. On that day, the rules included being filmed and you were told the rule and you were welcome to play if you accepted the rule. Your basic right was that you could choose not to play under those conditions. If you showed up one night and were told that the chouette was $100/point and that you could not play unless you agreed to those stakes, and you did not feel comfortable playing at $100/point would you have felt oppressed? Or would you have simply found another game you were comfortable in?
