Controversy in the Chou

Great points. I believe all chous, and all tournaments, and all play should be "friendly" and the way to keep it so is to have clear, definitive rules and structure that everyone adheres to with no exceptions. When you start allowing people to play outside the rules, even a little bit, that is when the chou becomes unfriendly, as each person is then free to interpret what rules he feels he should be held to and what rules he should hold his opponent to. And when I hear people say that they would allow a "friend" to correct an illegal move or mistake that they really didn't mean to make, I agree that this is an affront to anyone else that they would not give the same courtesy to, and that it is "unfair" to the others (cheating is a little bit too strong, but the affect is the same).
We have no problem in our chou when there is a fast roll...we strictly enforce the fast roll rule...nobody complains. Why should it be any different with any other rule?
The big problem with chouettes is that there is no "director" who makes final rulings. All of our rules are "agreed" to by the players. Unfortunately, when there is a question about the rules, I am the one they turn to because I have the most experience in writing up our rules and I have studied them most intently. So when people like Rory do something stupid or rude and out of line, and EVERYONE OBJECTS to it, and everyone agrees it is wrong, he blames me for stating that he has done something wrong, instead of blaming everyone for agreeing to a rule or ruling he thinks is unfair, or instead of taking responsibility himself for doing something that is clearly out of line and something that, if done to him, would probably make him go ballistic.
Yes, there is a "friendly" chouette...they all are, and they will stay that way if we are clear and consistent about the rules and procedures.
