Don't get me wrong, playing for stakes or trophies or rating points or whatever provides a proper motivation to try to play your best and maximize your outcome. And meaningful but not uncomfortable stakes adds to the excitement. But that doesn't mean it is the primary reason that I play.

I'm not trying to judge you... I've got over 10,000 experience points on FIBS, and only a tiny fraction of those represent matches with something on the line besides rating points. I play a match every week against a friend where we videotape it, analyze it, and discuss position, but nary a nickel changes hands.

But you kind of dodged my question... would you play in a chouette if they weren't playing for money?
