Legal plays

I know Richard and Phil are big proponents of 'legal plays', and IIRC, I think Jason is as well.
I'm not opposed to legal plays. When an opponent proposes legal plays to me, I happily go along with it, but I have not yet progressed to the point where I propose it.
All three of them have definitively stated in this thread that in tournament play when their opponent makes a legal but bone-headed play and picks up their dice that the play must stand. However, they propose that if their opponent makes a bone-headed play and adds the additional error of making a play that doesn't match the dice rolled, they must be let off the hook and always allowed to correct their play.
This is one of the inconsistencies that bothers me, and I haven't yet reconciled all of this.
So to clarify, I'm not completely on board with legal moves. If I'm playing somebody I don't know, I don't feel comfortable playing legal moves -- this is to protect my own interests.
