Controversy in the Chou

I am in full agreement that strict adherance to the rules avoids problems. And airtight, unambiguous rules with documented guidelines on how to handle the vast majority of conceivable scenarios also avoids problems as everyone would knows what to expect and can read it themselves. Wouldn't that be a wonderful thing? There might be far fewer posts on this forum, but I think I could live with that.
That said, irregularities are part of the game in that no set of rules can actually prevent their occurrence. There is no rule that says "the player committing an irregularity must be screwed".
Rolling on your opponent's side of the board without permission is an irregularity. You did not roll as the rules require. Shame on you. But the rules are clear on how this should be handled. You do not get screwed; you simply roll over. Properly.
Let's say that you did not lift the displaced blot to put it on the bar, but you instead left it as you described - sitting out in the middle of the playing field, not on any point. Or let's say that you left it sitting on a different point on top of one of your own checkers. That is clearly an invalid situation - not an illegal play; not a legal play, but an invalid play. No sane director should ever rule that the checker should be returned as a blot to its original position and your turn is over. You'd be asked to replay the position legally.
So again, be responsible and take care to follow the rules, and expect the same from your opponents. But don't believe that every accident demands a punishment. Common sense should always prevail.
