Controversy in the Chou

Until this year, the ABT did not actually have a rule to govern what this meant. The rule is now that a checker illegally removed from the board is a) an illegal move (and can be required to be corrected) b) out of play for the remainder of the game, but not borne off (gammons still in play).
I would personally strictly interpret that if the dice are up, a checker in the player's hand has not been "removed from play" while that hand remains elevated over the playing surface of the board and not beyond the perimeter of the board's playing surface. It is still in play, but not in a legal location, as if the checker were laying flat on the surface mid-way between the two homeboards. It is like a football or basketball player does not move out of bounds by jumping off the floor. I could see the argument that if the dice are up and the hand carries the checker beyond the vertical plane of the playing surface perimeter, that it has been removed from play - it has then moved "out of bounds" so to speak.
Whether you'd actually try to stick it to the opponent if they promptly returned the checker to the bar is another matter.
