I agree with Richard. If the checker was in your hand or in the middle of the field when you picked up your dice, that creates an 'impossible' position, not an illegal one. You should get to put the checker on the bar, (in other words, complete the legal play you intended). There is nothing that says a checker put in an impossible location (not on a point or the bar or 'off') must go back to its starting position.
This is the same thing as if you put a checker on the bar and it slipped back onto the field of play, and you then picked up your dice. The checker goes right back up on the bar and the game continues.
