My thoughts for a potential rule change...

I am vehemently opposed to the current interpretation/ruling that the match goes to the first person who reached the POSTED match winning score. It is not in the spirit of the game for two people to be making calculated/tactical/strategic decisions and have that negated because "a rule is a rule". This is a very good example of why I am opposed to the "director may deviate from precedent only under dire circumstances" or however you want to state that.
Common sense leads me to believe that if two players ACCIDENTALLY start playing to the wrong matchscore and it is not discovered until the match is over, then the matchscore they agreed to play to stands. If they INTENTIONALLY play to the non-posted score then BOTH are subject to punishment. Players should never be allowed/permitted to agree to changing the rules without consent of director.
I have also left open the case where it is noticed during a match that the players are playing to the wrong score. I believe this can be adjudicated (maybe with automatic issuance of clocks, possibly with tighter time settings than standard).
Again, as Phil says, what is the intent of the rule? I think there are multiple intents. One is that a fair contest occur. (This is why playing to a matchscore that is less than posted is not allowed.) Another is to keep the tournament flowing without time delays. Playing to a longer than posted matchlength potentially causes a problem here. Note that if a match is already completed, regardless of the play-to score, then short of disqualifying both players -- counter to the "fair contest" intent -- it cannot delay the tournament any less/more than it already has.
