In Response To: Rules discussion 2, preventing unnecessary shuffling (Stein Kulseth)

Clocks help here, as they do in many cases.

Before clocks I argued that not being allowed to shuffle had the potential of slowing down the game. (It could speed it up, though -- I doubt anyone knows. A study could help, but I doubt that will happen.)

Going to 'touch move' would be a rather significant change. It would (relatively speaking) help some players and hurt others. Likely it would help players who play OtB frequently and hurt those who don't. I think it's worth asking if that is good for the game in general.

One thing that should be done is to enforce the current rule of moving using only one hand. (I'm assuming here that this is a universal rule -- may not be.)

An improvement recommendation (change?) is that if a checker is moved to a point and the player changes his mind, the checker should be moved back to it's original position before moving it elsewhere. (E.g. Roll is 5-4; play moves 13/8, then decides he'd rather move the 4 first so plays 8/9 -- rather he should move the checker back to the midpoint and then play 13/9.)

Old habits are hard to break. Of course that by itself is not a reason to maintain the status quo, but realistically should at least be part of the input/discussion/etc.
