Thanks to Frank and Xavier, and conclusions

In Response To: i7 processor choice question (Chuck Bower)

(Per Xavier's suggestion) from the Fritz 11 chess benchmark results at THG, the 2.66 GHz i7-920 and 2.8 GHz i7-870 scale to the same performance. Those are the $290 devices listed at NewEgg. So it appears that the lower power (and potentially cooler running) Lynnfield -870 gets the nod because of these external properties. (Best, of course, would be to benchmark with the BG bots.)
