Containment checker play

Seems to me this problem should be solved as DMP. Sure, gammons sometimes matter in backgammon, but if you're trying to understand containment, gammons are noise to the goal.
And with that assumption, I personally also make the 12 and 10 points. There are 6 covers for the 6 point instead of 8 (making the 11), but zero shots rather than 3.
An extra shot costs more than an extra cover gains. That is because the shot loses immediately, while a failure to cover does not and you might still cover next turn, or have white enter and you hit back, or white may never enter and you may win the race. Assuming you have the choice, I'm not sure how many extra covers you need to balance each additional shot you leave, but I'd imagine the answer would be "more than 2" and would also depend on how likely the "just win the race" scenario becomes. In this case, the trade off is clear.
