32-bit vs 64-bit LINUX, etc.

Wow. I had never bothered to install a 32-bit Linux OS on my system as I just assumed 64-bit would be at least a little better but I wasn't expecting to see numbers like that. I don't use Windows but I wonder how much software is optimized for 64-bits and doesn't instead just run in compatibility mode. At least with Linux I know that all the software I use is 64-bit, I'm guessing that might make some kind of system-wide difference?
