I maintain that 40/40/20 is a more appropriate equity split. With two byes to be distributed among three players, the player who has already received a whole bye has more equity than he's entitled to, and he should be paying some compensation to the non-bye player.

The method Bill presented does this nicely. An alternative would be for the "late bye" player (the guy seeded into the finals) to pay 10% of the prize fund to the nonbye player, and the "early bye" semifinalist to pay 5% to the nonbye player. This should work fine as you actually pay at least three places, so that the early bye player can't end up in the hole.
