Another way to think about this:

For your example, in "away" units the score is 9-away, 8-away. This is between a 9-point match and and 8-point match, in fact you can call it the average of the two: "8 1/2 point match". Now just multiply 8 1/2 times the number of reserve minutes you want to allow per matchpoint (2 1/2 in the example) and you get the number of points to give each player.

Of course that is exactly what you did in your second method: (8+9) * 2.5 / 2. It's just the mnemonic that I've added.
