The odds of BOTH players failing to realize the cube was on 4 and a gammon was won is tiny.

True, but how many trials have there been for this tiny probability occurrence to be observed?

Analogous is the lottery. Any ticket has a tiny chance, yet someone eventually wins.

BTW, if you reread Barry's original post, he said the gammoned player started to offer his congratulations to his opp for winning the match. So that tips the scales away from neither player having noticed.
