Debra "About a month ago I bought a Intel Core i7-720QM Quad Core Mobile CPU, not anywhere as impressive as your new pc, but it’ll suffice."
I considered one of those for a new LT, but decided to wait til some firm like DS puts the i7-980X into LT's (currently they can do the i7-975 so I don't think it will be too long).
Debra "Btw, Intel's next desktop, coming at the end of 2010 (code-named "Sandy bridge")"
Yeah..that will be 8 core HT. I know a couple guys waiting 'til then to upgrade. Maybe when that comes out, I'll really splurge and get a dual Xeon version that will be 16 total cores and HT so 32 threads. Unless I am mistaken, MoBo's don't exist for dual i7's but do exist for dual Xeons. Off course Xeons are even more expensive.
Re: the i7-980X chip. Stock is 3.33 Ghz and with 6 core HT at that speed, things really rock. It also comes stock will a decent fan so people have been able to overclock it up to 4.0 Ghz without added cooling. I don't think I'd want to do that if running 24/7 and certainly not with the computer tucked into a cubby hole but still one can most likely safely run a stock chip above 3.33 GHz and 24/7.
To all re: i7 chips. Note that currently and for about the next 6 months (depends on Intel) the i7-980X is Intel's only 6 core HT chip. Other i7's are 4 core HT.
Anyhow, I have no qualms about running my watercooled rig 24/7 at 4.5 GHz. Perhaps I can fine tune it more and drop temps a bit or be able to run a bit faster.
