I thought it was a straightforward principle that you always stay unless the bg will cost you the match, and then you run.

It might be a straightforward principle, but apparently it's not well known. I got bamboozled on this in Las Vegas, where I hung around for the CC while leading -2/-6 with the cube on 2. Pow. I feel better that others are getting nailed on this too, although backgammon isn't graded on a curve.
